Nitrokey Start is an open-source cryptographic USB security key designed for encrypting emails, files, and server access. It utilizes hardware-based encryption to store private keys locally, which are protected by a PIN. The device supports RSA and ECC cryptographic algorithms and provides up to three storage slots for decryption, signing, and authentication keys. It also contains a built-in True Random Number Generator (TRNG).
Common applications include local desktop login, secure SSH server administration, source code signing, and verifying the authenticity of IoT products. While it facilitates SSH server administration, the hardware key does not support SSH authentication using the FIDO2 standard.
