Rude by Rugged Tooling is a network emulator designed for creating accurate and repeatable errors in IP traffic in real-time. Originally developed for telecom engineers, it supports testing in various IP-based data transmission environments, including industrial settings. Rude combines microsecond accuracy with up to 25 Gbps line rate, emulating challenging network conditions such as bandwidth limitations, line breaks, broken packets, and bursty traffic. It allows users to test networks before deployment, recreating real-life challenges with numerous flows in a laboratory environment. Rude is suitable for training operational processes and communications in problem situations, and for testing system capacity and resilience under heavy traffic loads. It supports various network technologies including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, pure IP networks, and Wi-Fi, with data rates ranging from 1G to 100G. The tool facilitates functional safety testing by enabling the creation of fault scenarios, allowing users to develop test cases and evaluate results. Rude is particularly useful for testing and verifying network resilience in LTE and IMS networks.
