Nym by Nym Technologies is a decentralized privacy infrastructure that operates as a Layer 0 mixnet system for protecting network traffic metadata and patterns. It encrypts and anonymizes internet traffic through a multi-layered network architecture where data packets traverse through three daisy-chained encrypted nodes located on different continents. The system employs Sphinx packet format for message encryption and uses a combination of mix nodes, gateways, and validators to route and obfuscate network traffic. The architecture makes it difficult for services to determine which user is connecting since they only see the IP address of the Nym exit gateway. Network packets are mixed with other users' traffic and combined with dummy traffic (cover traffic) to prevent timing correlation attacks. The infrastructure enables anonymous credential systems through zk-nyms and includes entry/exit gateways for accessing internet services anonymously. The system operates through a decentralized network of node operators and stakers, implementing a trustless design where no components or operators can access information that could compromise user privacy. Nym integrates cryptocurrency-based incentives through NYM tokens to maintain network operations.
