Network Intelligence Web Application Firewall (WAF) is a security appliance or software designed to protect web applications from attacks and data leakage. It operates by positioning itself between the web server and the Internet, scrutinizing application layer messages for violations of the programmed security policy. Unlike network firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention systems that defend the network perimeter, WAFs specifically protect application-layer traffic through the use of signatures and acceptable-use policies.
