The MTG CryptoController is a cryptographic middleware module designed for the secure operation of smart metering infrastructures. It functions as a central security component for gateway administration (GWA), metering data reception as a passive external market participant (pEMT), and smart grid management as an active external market participant (aEMT). The system handles the decryption, encryption, validation, and signing of content data, while securing data transmission via Transport Layer Security (TLS).
Additionally, the MTG CryptoController manages the connection to root Certificate Authorities (CA) and sub-CAs within the Smart Meter Public Key Infrastructure (SM-PKI). It processes SM-PKI certificates for communication partners, enabling secure communication with smart meter gateways (SMGW) and facilitating operations via AS4-based market communication (MAKO) and the BDEW Web API. A dedicated version, the MTG Mehrwert-Konnektor, provides specific support for controllable local systems (CLS) management.
