CodeTwo Backup for Exchange is a server application for the backup and recovery of data from Microsoft Exchange Server, SharePoint, and Microsoft 365. The software connects to source servers via Exchange Web Services (EWS) and SharePoint APIs to create one-time or continuous, incremental backups of mailboxes, public folders, and site collections. It identifies mailboxes by their primary SMTP address and stores backup data on local or network-attached storage. The backup processes operate in the background without interrupting end-user services and use data batching to manage server throttling.
The system is managed through a central administration panel for configuring backup jobs, retention policies, data filtering, and server connections. It utilizes Basic Authentication for on-premises Exchange and SharePoint servers and supports multi-factor authentication (MFA) via app passwords for other connections. For data recovery, the software facilitates the granular restoration of individual items or attachments, as well as the full restoration of entire mailboxes or sites. It also supports item versioning and allows for data to be exported to PST files to meet compliance or data portability requirements.
